Jim Jarrell ShihanJim Jarrell began his study (along with five other 5-year-olds) with Master Chen Lee Woo in 1969. By 1975, he was the only remaining student of Master Chen. Mr. Jarrell's lessons continued for eight more years.

In 1982, Mr. Jarrell met and practiced with Sensei Edward E. Wilkes of the El Toro Judo Club of MCAS El Toro until December of 1983. In 1984, Mr. Jim P. Jarrell reached the age of 20 and was awarded his Sandan, a Third Degree Black Belt.

In 1986, Shihan Jim Jarrell, with the help of Sensei Edward E. Wilkes, started developing a system of Self Defense utilizing some of the philosophies of Woo Chen and Kobu Jitsu (Weaponry). This system took six years to complete and is known as Jarrell Ryu Ju-Jitsu. This system consists of Hand-to-Weapon Combat and Combat Self-Defense.

In 1990, Mr. Jim Jarrell was awarded the title of Shihan and his Rokkyudan (Sixth Degree Black Belt). In 1993, Master Chen Lee Woo, who was dying, gave Shihan Jim P. Jarrell the Woo Chen Karate Jitsu System making Shihan Jim P. Jarrell the New Headmaster of Woo Chen Karate Jitsu with the rank of Kudan, Ninth Degree Black Belt and the Chen Family name Chen Siu Lung (Little Dragon of the Chen Family). Shihan Jim P. Jarrell was now faced with the responsibility of being the only teacher of Woo Chen Karate Jitsu and Head of the Chen Family.

In 1993, both Master Chen Lee Woo and Shihan Jim P. Jarrell decided to promote Sensei Edward E. Wilkes, of the Wild Bill Wilkies Judo and Ju-Jitsu Club, to Sichidan in Woo Chen Aikido/Karate Goshin Jitsu with the Chen Family name of Chen Da Hu (Big Tiger of the Chen Family). Also Shihan Jim P. Jarrell met Sijo Jim Miller in Austin, Texas in 1993. Sijo Miller is the Founder and Headmaster of the Shaolin Ba Sheng Chan Gung Fu System. Sijo Miller holds the rank of Sichidan, a seventh Degree Black Belt, in Chinese Gung Fu – Okinawan Uechi Ryu Jitsu, and is the C.E.O. and President of the American Bu Jitsu Association.

Shihan Jim P. Jarrell realized with Sijo Miller's expertise, he would be a great asset to the Chen Family and invited him into the Chen Family as a brother, educator, and helper. He was given the Family name Chen Hu Lung (Tiger Dragon of the Chen Family).

On March 1, 1997 Shihan Jim P. Jarrell, the New Headmaster of Woo Chen Karate Jitsu and Jarrell Ryu Ju-Jitsu, was officially recognized and registered by the United States Martial Arts Association (U.S.M.A.). Shihan Jim P. Jarrell was further honored by becoming a member of the National Board of Directors of U.S.M.A.

In 1998 Shihan Jim P. Jarrell, of the Goshin Budokai U.S.A. (Branch Dojo of the Goshin Budokan U.S.A. (Doshu Edward E. Wilkes), and Master Chen Lee Woo created the Jarrell Ryu Institute of Woo Chen Karate Jitsu and Ju-Jitsu. Until this time lessons of Woo Chen had never been written down. Shihan Jarrell and Kenneth E. Worthington Jr. worked diligently together to put the completed rank requirements in writing. This information can now be taught to as many students as desired while showing the true spirit and philosophy of Master Chen. Because of Mr. Worthington's unselfish efforts, and in the true spirit of being involved with the making of this manual, he was awarded the rank of Shodan, a First Degree Black Belt.
